4 Qualities Every Supply Chain Manager Needs

As a supply chain manager, you will find that there are qualities that are helpful for you to do your job effectively.

If you want to be a successful supply chain manager and be a leader within your organization, it is important to display or develop some of the important qualities that every supply chain manager needs.

1. Go With Your Gut

Education and experience are important to every supply chain manager’s career success; however, your gut is just as important. You know your job, so trust your gut feeling when making decisions. No matter whether you are deciding on a teammate, project, or meeting, sometimes it will simply come down to your gut on what the right decision is.

2. Trust Your People

You built a successful team of people to work with and now you need to trust them. Trusting your people says two things – one, that you feel confident in the decision you made to put your team together;  and two, that you trust the education and experience of your team to get their job done.

Make yourself available for assistance and questions but do not micromanage your team. Give them a job to do and trust them to do it.

3. Don’t Be Afraid to Take a Chance

As a supply chain manager, you will find that you will have many opportunities to make decisions.  Sometimes you will have to make a decision and take a chance. Don’t be afraid to take a chance and risk making a mistake. Mistakes are how we learn.  Sometimes taking a chance leads to mistakes but sometimes they lead to something great.

4. Set the Example

Your team will be looking at you to set the example for job responsibilities as well as work ethic. If you expect your team to be at work by a specific time, don’t wander in later. If you expect that they will stay late to finish a project, you need to be willing to stay with them. Set the example of how you want your team to work and act you will get great results.

Developing the qualities that every supply chain manager should have will help every supply chain manager excel at their job and work toward that next career step.  As a supply chain manager, you will likely be looking for that next promotion. Be sure to concentrate on the qualities that will help you be the best supply chain manager you can be.

4 Ways to Be More Effective as a Supply Chain Manager

You spend most of your waking hours at your job. There are times when, as a supply chain manager, you may feel that you are not getting things done during your day.  Being effective at your job is important and finding ways to make your day more productive can be a challenge.

Following these tips can have you on your way to being a more effective supply chain manager:

1. Limit Daily Distractions

In the age of computers, cell phones, smartphones, and the internet, it can be difficult at times to keep distractions out of your day.  The best way to tackle distractions is to schedule distractors such as personal calls, email, and Internet into your daily schedule and not allow yourself to use them during other times.

2. Prioritize Tasks and Organize Your Day

Understanding what you need to accomplish in your day is imperative to prioritizing your tasks and making your way through them.  As a supply chain manager, you will have many daily tasks; making a list of daily, weekly, and even monthly tasks is a great way to make it through your day.

Setting time limits for tasks is also a way to get through things and make sure you get to each priority on your list.

3. Use Effective Time Saving Tools

If you have trouble keeping track of your day or tasks, learn to use automated calendars and task managing software to help you get through it.  Investing time in learning to use time-saving software or applications can save you time in the long run.  As a supply chain manager, making the most of your time is an important way to make it through your busy day.

4. Know Yourself and Be Honest

As a supply chain manager you will have many tasks to complete.  Knowing your strengths and weaknesses is important to be able to schedule tasks properly and prepare for deadlines correctly.

If you know you need assistance with a particular aspect, seek assistance; however, if you know you are efficient at other portions of your projects, you can schedule those for times in your day or week when you may not have as much free time or be as focused.
